How can I fix my marriage without counselling?

How can I repair a broken tap with no plumbing knowledge? How can I remove a tumour with no medical knowledge? How can I repair my car engine with no mechanical knowledge?

These answers are not meant to be sarcastic, they are simply to illustrate the point that you are asking a similar question about your marriage. A professional counsellor has trained and practiced for years to master a body of knowledge, to try and fix a marriage without help might be possible but is it probable? No.

I wonder why people might ask this question and a few ideas come to mind, so let me elaborate on those, hopefully something that follows helps you.

If you are asking the question because

1) of financial restraints: there are relationship counselling books that might be helpful or some organisations such as Relationships Australia offer low cost or free counselling.

2) your partner is unwilling or unlikely to participate: in this case I would advise you to see a counsellor by yourself which may help get new perspective, strategies or resolve for working through issues with your partner.
